Essex Print Studio hosts workshops and classes in a range of printmaking techniques. We invite practising, professional printmakers to design and run some exciting and interesting classes at Hippo Screenprinters’ studio in Margaretting. We are also working with some alternative venues in Essex in which to hold a selection of our classes in order to expand our possibilities.

Our workshops and classes are designed to appeal to everyone from interested beginners to professional artists wishing to extend their practice. The list below will continue to expand and grow as we add additional exciting events so keep checking back for updates.

…. Essex Print Studio is expanding this year !

At time of writing (March 6th 2019) our new studio expansion is almost finished. We will be moving in in time for the first of our new batch of classes and workshops and we will be sure to post some photos as soon as it’s ready.

We are also now the proud owners (renters !) of the adjoining building on Dawes Farm which we will be converting into a small number of Artist’s Studios … !! We will have five self contained studio spaces available to rent, and they will come with a FREE membership to our print studio included. This will allow the resident artists to use our Open Access facilities as well as other benefits. More info and details will be coming soon.

Pop Art Screen Printing

Saturday 20th July

Tutor: Julieta Hernandez Adame & David Vassie
Venue: Essex Print Studio

Learn to screen print while creating a bold, colourful, Typographic poster inspired by Pop artist Corita Kent.
Corita Kent was a contemporary of Andy Warhol, and also a Nun, who created joyful, subversive and sometimes controversial ‘Pop Art’ screen prints which revolutionised typographic design, challenged the Roman Catholic Church and carried political messages about racism, poverty and injustice.
Kent incorporated advertising slogans and song lyrics, as well as biblical verses and quotes from literature, to create vibrant screen prints, created using simple techniques of hand painting onto the screens, cut and torn paper stencils, and the layering of bold with transparent colours.
On this one day workshop you will learn and experiment with these simple techniques which are all easy to acheive at home with the minimum of equipment.Through experimenting and playing you will create your own inspirational, political, or even controversial, poster to take home !

Suitable for complete beginners or those who want to experiment with screen printing techniques

Join artist & printmaker Lynne Blackburn of Essex Print Studio for a weekend ‘Reduction Lino Printing’ workshop.

Reduction Lino Printing is a way of creating a multi-coloured print from just one block of lino. Areas are carved out of the lino and a print, or edition of prints, are made after each cutting. More lino is removed at each stage until all that is left are the final, usually darkest areas, of the print.

You will learn how to use the tools and inks used in linocut printing, and how to hand carve a design and take prints from it. Linocuts can be printed easily by hand or with a simple press.
