Mokulito is a form of lithography and is a great technique for anyone who enjoys drawing and experimenting with different kinds of mark-making. Unlike in traditional lithography, which uses a stone or metal plate, for mokulito, the image is drawn on a plywood plate, offering the opportunity to make large prints relatively economically. Because wood is an organic substance, the image changes slightly each time the plate is printed, meaning that editions are small and variable. As the printing session progresses, the grain of the wood gradually becomes more dominant, often producing the evocative veils of colour that are so characteristic of this technique. A particular advantage of using wood as the printing matrix is the possibility of combining mokulito with woodcut, which can be used to produce contrasting sharp lines and textures. This one day workshop will teach you how to draw, process and print one or two mokulito plates
All materials will be provided but we suggest that you bring along a packed lunch.
Suitable for beginners.

This weekend course introduces you to photo screen printing where an image is exposed onto a silkscreen coated with a photo-sensitive emulsion. This allows a huge array of mark-making, textures and imagery, both hand-drawn and photographic, to be used to create a stencil on the screen.
Over the weekend you will experiment with various materials to create suitable hand drawn and painted designs onto clear film, and to combine these with a photographic image, to print a two layer screen print. You will learn how to coat and expose your image onto the screen, mixing the inks and registration techniques which enable you to print a small edition of your prints to take home.
Students will need to prepare some imagery in advance of the course and information on what to prepare will be sent out in good time before the class date.
All bookings are final and we are not able to issue any refunds, except in exceptional circumstances

Kitchen Litho is a great technique for anyone who enjoys drawing and experimenting with different kinds of mark-making. Unlike in traditional lithography, which uses a stone or metal plate, Kitchen Litho has been developed and adapted to use only everyday items which everyone has in their kitchen !
‘Kitchen Litho Improvers’ is designed for those who have tried this fascinating technique before and those who attended our previous ‘Kitchen Litho Beginners’ class. Caroline will demonstrate more adventurous techniques and an effective way to register multiple plates for colour printing. Students will then use these techniques to create their own prints and small artist’s books under Caroline’s guidance.
If you want to book both dates please email us directly for a discount. Both classes booked together will be £135. Email website@essexprintstudio.co.uk
We will be printing our Litho prints using the excellent ‘Xcut Xpress’ portable die cutting machine, which is a very affordable way of making great prints at home.

In this class we will introduce you to a safer and more environmentally friendly etching process, using common materials available to everyone and some classic alternatives too.
You will learn how to prepare a zinc plate with an acrylic ground, draw your design into the ground, and then etch it using a copper sulphate solution which etches without producing toxic fumes and so is a contribution to a cleaner environment.
We will also show you how to ink and print your plate and you’ll go home with a small edition of prints.
Please be aware that although this technique is much safer than acid etching, some of the materials used can be harmful if used without a mask or gloves (These items will be available on the day). Not suitable for children or pregnant women. We will also be using white spirit for cleaning up so please let us know at the beginning of the class that you are ok with this.

This exciting weekend workshop is suitable for those who are already familiar with lino cutting techniques and who want to add a new dimension to their practice. Over the 2 days you will create an A4 lino print using 2 or 3 lino blocks and combining both cut and etched marks. This will involve learning how to etch the lino block using a solution of caustic soda. You will learn how to register your multiple lino blocks so that they print over each other.
You will need to have an idea of your image to bring with you and it should involve some textural background areas and other, strongly defined elements.
Your tutor for the weekend will be Steve Edwards, Artist & Printmaker, who is a member of East London Printmakers; Greenwich Printmakers; and the Printmakers Council. You can see some of his work, including his beautiful views of London and other landscapes, which utilise the etched lino technique, here http://steveedwardsart.com/ For more inspiration have a look at our Facebook page to see some of the beautiful prints created on our previous weekend workshops – https://www.facebook.com/essexprintstudio/
