Working in this way will free up your drawing technique, allow you to discover textures and accidental mark-making which you can utilise in your drawing, and. at the same time, you can experiment with a variety of printmaking methods which can be practised at home with a minimum of equipment.

For the first class we will be working with oil based inks rolled out onto a plate, worked into with rags, cotton buds, scrapers etc, drawn into and transferred onto paper.  Classes coming up in the New Year will explore mono screenprinting; lino cutting and printing; and drypoint etching, all whilst working directly from the life model.

Etching Without Acid

11.00am – 5.00pm

Standard Tickets £75 per person

Venue: Essex Print Studio

In this class we will introduce you to a safer and more environmentally friendly etching process, using common materials available to everyone and some classic alternatives too.

You will learn how to prepare a zinc plate with an acrylic ground, draw your design into the ground, and then etch it using a copper sulphate solution which etches without producing toxic fumes and so is a contribution to a cleaner environment.

We will also show you how to ink and print your plate and you’ll go home with a small edition of prints.

Please be aware that although this technique is much safer than acid etching, some of the materials used can be harmful if used without a mask or gloves (These items will be available on the day). Not suitable for children or pregnant women. We will also be using white spirit for cleaning up so please let us know at the beginning of the class that you are ok with this.
